Annandale Bloom will close

The Bloom grocery store in Annandale will close due to underperformance, Washington’s ABC affiliate reported Jan. 12. Six other Blooms in Virginia and one in Maryland will also close. Another 42 Blooms in those states will be converted to Food Lion.

The Annandale Bloom, at 7000 Columbia Pike, always seemed kind of empty since it opened in January 2010. It hasnt been announced when the store will close, but an employee said it will be within 30 days at the absolute latest. The store's hours have been cut back to 6 a.m.-8 p.m.

This is just the latest of a series of recent business changes in central Annandale: The RoomStore is closing, and Maxx Fitness has shut down although  a new gym will open in that spot. At least there is some good news: Josephs Coat is moving here. Weve also got a new Korean restaurant, Soldoga, across from the old Fairfax Auto Parts, and Bueno Mexican Grill is coming to Columbia Pike.

  1. While I'm part of the problem, often driving by it to go to Giant or Harris Teeter, it was nice having a grocery store so close. Even within walking distance, as we discovered during the blizzard shortly after they opened.

  5. I too will miss the Bloom for a quick run for beer! Closest to my house, but we shop at Giant and HT mainly. Bloom had cheap lunchmeat though.
Guy also trying to get in told me tonight when I jiggled the locked doors that he heard it might go back to being a Food Lion? Don't know if that's just a rumor.

One sign of a declining area is the opening of thrift stores so can't imagine how Joseph's Coat is good news.

What happened to the nouvueux riche Korean guys that had plans to redevelop downtown Annandale a few years ago by redoing the whole K-Mart shopping center? Where are they now?

Lamenting aside there are two gems inside the beltway the world has left behind and will look completely different 10 years from now when they are redeveloped - Springfield and Annandale.

It would be a shame to lose the Annandale Grill though...last reminder this was once a VERY Southern town where good ol' boys felt at home.

  7. Just visited the Bloom tonight, starting today they are closing at 6 instead of 11. Probably just trying to unload all of their existing inventory before they close soon.

A Hooters taking its place would be nice lol.

  8. So many closings in Annandale is troubling. Bloom must have horrible corporate management--seems like they just opened the store.

    1. It is troubling, and as nice as it may be to have Joseph's Coat in the area, I'm wondering what it says about Annandale that national or regional retail is leaving, while second hand stores and ethnic restaurants are moving in.

  9. Shame. I used it every couple days except with the Loemanns Giant as my source of fresh meat. Unfortunately, the decision to open the store was made before the economy went south. By the time it was actually constructed (a lot of work) it was already sunk. And its relatively small size made it that much less attractive.

  13. oh good! annandale really need ANOTHER korean restaurant.

  14. Ethnic restaurants moving in don't indicate a declining area, though we really don't need anymore Korean ones so some diversity would be nice. Second hand stores are right up there with check cashing businesses, loan sharks that use car titles, tattoo parlors, nail supply stores and pawn shops in terms of killing appeal.

  15. Hey Blogmaster - did you delete a post about Hooters? Probably just jokes but even if they were was that offensive? Stop censoring posts YOU don't agree with due to political correctness or people like me will stop patronizing and promoting this blog!

    1. That must have been an oversight. It was certainly not intentional. Hopefully, that comments is still in the system. As you can see from all the highly critical comments posted, I don't censor anything - except spam.

  18. Was at the bar tonight at Silverado. A Bloom employee was filling out a job application. Said he thought Bloom would sell the property. Don't think they own the property but a prime spot that should be filled soon enough after all the money poor Blom spent upgraing it with capital improvements. We can only hope.
