Illegal yard sales: Braddock Road 'bazaars' expanding


The illegal yard sales along Braddock Road are spreading like a cancer to more houses. The photos on this page, taken on Sunday, July 23, show a huge “bazaar” on the front lawn at 3906 Braddock, as buyers browse among large appliances, furniture, TVs, and other items shipped to the site for a quick sale.

Neighbors who have been observing these weekly sales, and who prefer to remain anonymous, speculate that the sales are likely organized and conducted by the same people who have been cited by Fairfax County code compliance officials for conducting illegal sales at 3908, 4508, and 4127 Braddock Road. The merchandise on sale at all those sites are similar, and observers believe the items are being stored at 3908 Braddock.

In addition to the illegal yard sales, complaints have been filed for 3906 Braddock for dwelling overcrowding, egress problems, outdoor storage, a large and dangerous dead tree, construction debris in the yard, and parking on the grass.

Community leaders have called for a meeting with county officials next week to request a comprehensive investigation and to ensure that enforcement of zoning laws will be carried out on weekends.

  1. And this will continue as long as the so-called Supervisor of Mason District aka the Gross, Penny refuses to actually represent the law abiding constituency of the district.
    She has turned a blind eye to all
    manners of degradation of the "Village of Annandale" "Alexandria" and surrounds. The area is becoming a hell-hole of code violations, abandoned commercial properties, neglected streetscapes, abused, overcrowded residential properties, sidewalks and parking lots filled with vulgarly behaving vagrants all due to the lack of oversight and/or interest by the Distrct government and her related police force.
    She has single handedly orchestrated the decline of most all of the neighborhoods by her continuing lack of involvement and attention to local requests for enforcement.
    No small matter that she doesn't even live in the "heart" of Mason District, but on the edge of or perhaps in a much better governed one led by the sincerely involved and forward thinking Jeff McKay.
    The continued term of Gross, Penny is criminal in her neglect and degradation of a once lovely community led to great heights by Tom Davis and Tina Trapnell, and I am a life time Democrat stating this. The Gross, Penny must go. Save Mason District! Support the Disaffected, Retire the Ineffective. If necessary, vote your dog for supervisor, it's a better choice.

  2. It is going to get only worse because our county leaders just do not care. We look like a third world country. I love how the ice cream truck is also getting in on the illegal sales.

  3. It is pretty unbelieveable that the county does not stop this activity. Supervisor Gross needs to make it her business to protect the investments of the property owners already on record, not the ones developers hope to add.

    1. Our County/Local government has lost its ability to be effective. Fairfax has the seventh wealthiest per capita income in the US and we are being forced to live like second class citizens. Do our officials live in this community or do they just commute?

      Did I wake up from a nightmare where we just lost a war to a third world underclass, is this the US or somewhere else? Please tell me this is a bad dream.

  4. Another illegal commercial yard sale was conducted at 4010 Braddock Road on Saturday 7/28. Residents saw a large commercial truck unload appliances and merchandise onto the front lawn of this rental property around 8am in the morning. Community leaders were contacted by residents who in turn contacted Zoning, The Mason District Office and the Police. None of these County agencies arrived on the scene to shut down this organized illegal commercial operation. Sales, traffic and littering of Braddock Road continued throughout the day.

  7. To the first commenter who repeated used the term "Gross Penny" - seriously?? I think you can make your point without making yourself sound like an immature 5 year old. I hate the bazaars too, and think we should hold our all elected officials accountable..but you don't need to degrade the conversation with silly insults. P.S. Tom Davis was great. Tina Trapnell was a crook.

    Just an idea, I am not from that area of Annandale but I was thinking... why not boycott with picket signs every time it takes place? (If that's possible and legal).

  9. you people have way too much time in your hands. The country is in the process of being bankrupt and your worried about a few yard sales and wasting my tax dollars on this ridiculous matter.
