Virginia is having a sales tax holiday

School supplies from Target.
It’s back-to-school shopping time, and this weekend is a good time to get started: Virginia’s sales tax holiday for school supplies and clothing is Aug. 3-5.

Certain school supply items priced at $20 or less and clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less are tax exempt during this three-day period.

Eligible school supplies include music and art supplies, as well as instructional materials. The tax exemption does not cover computers or computer supplies.

The tax exemption for clothing does not apply to accessories or to sporting equipment or footwear “designed primarily for athletic activity or apparel designed primarily for protective use and not usually considered appropriate for everyday wear.”

But almost every other kind of clothing can be purchased tax free during the tax holiday. The state guidelines on the Virginia Department of Taxation website has a list of eligible clothing items. Wedding gowns are included, but good luck finding one for $100!
