I think it is a blue heron. Saw the same bird (type at least) in my backyard around 6 PM yesterday. I live about 1 mi from greenspring. Their usual habit is around bodies of water (see them frequently at Lake Accotink), so not sure what it was doing in my back yard.
Thank goodness for Green Springs. It is a real jewel. Just keep VDOT off the property before they make the facility pay $10k for bringing nature back to Mason District.
Great Blue Heron...we are lucky to have such a beautiful place so close to us.
