Franconia man arrested for murdering roommate

A 32-year-old man was killed, apparently after being struck with a blunt object by a roommate, in the 6000 block of Hydrangea Drive in Franconia at about 10:21 this morning, states a news release from the Franconia Police Station.

Eric C. Kweder, 34, of 6035 Hydrangea Drive, has been charged with murder. He had fled the scene but was apprehended by police at about 2:30 p.m. within five miles. The police used a helicopter, K-9, and tips from civilians in their search. The crime occurred in a townhouse development not far from the intersection of Franconia Road and S. Van Dorn Street.

Update: Police have identified the victim as Andy Yu, 32, the Washington Post reported Dec. 4. Officers found an ax next to Yu’s body and said he suffered trauma to his head and neck. Another roommate had called the police after hearing Yu and Kweder fighting. Kweder, a former Marine, had been a track and field star at Edison High School.

  1. Kweder was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years in prison in July 2014. Kweder's attorney told the jury his client was mentally ill and that voices told him to kill Yu, his long-time friend. Kweder had been an All-Met runner in the 1990s.
