Marie Lemmon named principal of Bailey's Elementary School

Lemmon

Bailey’s Elementary School has a new principal: Marie Lemmon, the former principal of Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School since 2006. Her first day at Baileys was Monday, Nov. 26.

Keith Hall, a retired FCPS assistant principal, had been serving as interim principal at Bailey’s since July when Shane Wolfe resigned after been on medical leave for several months. Wolfe is now principal of Aldrin Elementary School in Reston.

On her resume, Lemmon lists among her accomplishments significant gains in test scores in math and reading for black and Hispanic students and for English language learners at Mount Vernon Woods.

Other accomplishments cited by Lemon: Leading Mount Vernon Woods out of sanction status under the No Child Left Behind Act, transforming the school into a professional learning community that promotes teacher collaboration, a significant decrease in student disciplinary incidents, and introduction of a Chinese language program.
Lemmon was previously assistant principal at Hybla Valley Elementary School (2003-06) and Riverside Elementary (2002-03) and taught at Woodley Hills Elementary  (1999-992)—all in the Route 1 corridor—and before that taught in Prince George’s County schools for four years.

Lemmon earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., in 1995 and  master’s degree in educational leadership from George Mason University in 2002.

  1. Watch out, Baileys!

Mrs. Lemmon, is not a people person. Sadly, she lacks the ability to manage her staff, just look at the turn over rate at her previous school. I am sure there will be many who is leave because of her at Bailey's.

How she got this job is beyond me. I am sure Mr. Parris, wanted a current principal from the county and this why she did get it. But it going to be sad for Bailey's... Let's see how many will leave because of her this year.........

  3. I agree. When Ms. Lemmon introduced herself to the staff, she said something to the effect of "I'm Marie Lemmon, I was principal at Mt. Vernon Woods. If you want to know more about me, you will figure that out on your own". Very awkward introduction. Nothing personal about how she loves a football team or her family or anything. As far as I know, she didn't visit classrooms for more than 2 minutes during the year. Strange. I am sympathetic to how big Bailey's is, but that should not be an excuse for not popping into classrooms. Thoughts?

    1. When Lemmon introduced herself to the Mt. Vernon Elem. staff she said, "I have been sent here to get rid of the dirt." Can you imagine how all of the teachers felt? It was totally disgusting and no way to unify the school! Mt. V. W. is a tough school to teach at to begin with because of its population and instead of praise or promises to assist, she attacked. Lemmon makes all decisions herself as if the teachers do not count.

  4. Completely noncommunicative personally and professionally. Decision made are impromptu, without instructional value, lacking needs of children and not discussed with staff. There's no longer a community of learners, just militaristic demands. So sad.

    1. Marie Lemmon continues to rule unethically. She is not a valued leader, makes poor decisions regarding the needs of children, and takes questions from staff personally. She's not well trained and is extremely insecure. She's in way over her head. She seems to get rid of teachers at the snap of a finger, without any cause or merit, just power. Two law suits have not wavered her audacity. A sad state of affair at Baileys!!

  7. A few teachers wrote letters to the cluster office, complaining about her leadership and many teacher's left last school year. The funny part is that she didn't even complete the entire school year. At her old school "Mount Vernon Woods", it was a "revolving door," because the turn over rates for teachers & staff was actually among the highest in the elementary school settings. Marie, didn't have programs at Mount Vernon Woods and she led by fear.

The former principal at Bailey's really changed the culture at Bailey's and put in place collaboration. It was a powerful tool for professional development and a driver for school improvement. Many still believe collaboration is a sign of weakness when, in fact, the work done to create collaborative working environments is far more difficult to achieve than the other positional, adversarial model.

  8. We're noticing she's doing lots of PR stuff. She's probably trying to keep her name/reputation clean. But she's not smart enough to do anything constructive, particularly at a big, complex school like Bailey's. The hiring-powers should have waited until the end of the school year to find a highly qualified person for the Bailey's position. Since she came last December, she's been overwhelmed and bullying is her go-to. And she's so spontaneous, you never know when you'll be the victim of her paranoia. In light of what's happened at Fort Hunt, maybe the new Superintendent will help principals like ML to collaborate and listen to teachers, develop a positive community, and maintain a learning atmosphere -- especially at the top.

  9. My child went to Mount Vernon Elementary School while she was still there and I can tell you that she is awful and an unpleasant woman to deal with. In all my years, I never came across a school official with such rudeness like herself. She even came up to me a few times with attitude and did not care about anyone. She had poor approach with the students and parents. One of the main reasons why I had to pull my child out of that school. I used to go to this school when I was younger and it was good but while she was there, I noticed it was just terrible. I'm just glad I took my child out of that school when she was there! Terrible principle!

  10. OMG ...I have read every single comment posted here and I must agree with every single one of them!
I have someone very close to me that Marie specifically targeted ( 5 plus years ago) and I must say that every description of her was true back then and NO ONE at FCPS area office was interested...I bet they are now!
I have been around FCPS teachers at multiple schools for over 35 years and have never seen an administrator so thoroughly despised by an entire school, she was a constant topic of conversation from her first day till her last day there. Guess it continues 5 years later at Bailey’s.

OMG must read...from Channel 9 WUSA... all 31 pages of court filings, statements...things she said and did...
    some things never change!
Same old person and tactics but this time she may have met her match, I hope!

  12. How long before she is put on admin leave pending her legal issue. Judging by the disgust on this comment board which I am sure has increased correspondence to FCPS board, I put the over/under at 2 1/2 weeks.

  14. Marie Lemmon is a bully that utilizes a bullying campaign to create terror in the Bailey School. Yet the school district keeps protecting her atrocious and disgusting conduct against her staff. Her conduct is not conducive to the workplace and it is appalling that she continues to get away with it.

  15. lol I have dealt with this lady on the phone and she is so rude. She does use bully tactics to intimidate people. However, she ran into a brick wall when she was talking to me. I just kept trolling her on the phone (because she's a rude c$%t) until she hung up on me. She knows now to call my office with respect. Teachers just need to start standing up to these FCPS garbage principals. For some reason FCPS is great at recycling shitty principals with other shitty principals. I guess the educational leadership degree attracts douche bags only cause 90% of FCPS principals suck at leading.
