Bailey’s Elementary School has a new principal: Marie Lemmon, the former principal of Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School since 2006. Her first day at Bailey’s was Monday, Nov. 26.
Keith Hall, a retired FCPS assistant principal, had been serving as interim principal at Bailey’s since July when Shane Wolfe resigned after been on medical leave for several months. Wolfe is now principal of Aldrin Elementary School in Reston.
On her resume, Lemmon lists among her accomplishments significant gains in test scores in math and reading for black and Hispanic students and for English language learners at Mount Vernon Woods.
Other accomplishments cited by Lemon: Leading Mount Vernon Woods out of sanction status under the No Child Left Behind Act, transforming the school into a professional learning community that promotes teacher collaboration, a significant decrease in student disciplinary incidents, and introduction of a Chinese language program.
Lemmon was previously assistant principal at Hybla Valley Elementary School (2003-06) and Riverside Elementary (2002-03) and taught at Woodley Hills Elementary (1999-992)—all in the Route 1 corridor—and before that taught in Prince George’s County schools for four years.
Lemmon earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., in 1995 and master’s degree in educational leadership from George Mason University in 2002.
