Man arrested for DWI after police pursuit

Fairfax County Police arrested a man shortly after midnight on Dec. 9 at Landmark Mall after a traffic pursuit. An officer observed a vehicle with expired license plates and “defective equipment” at Backlick Road and Hechinger Drive, Springfield, and attempted to stop the vehicle, according to the Police Blotter.

The driver struck a mailbox and trash can and attempted to ram a police cruiser. The pursuit continued until the suspect vehicle struck a curb on the ramp from I-395 to Duke Street, causing a flat tire. The vehicle pulled into the parking lot of Landmark Mall and the driver and passenger bailed out and attempted to flee on foot. They were apprehended a short distance away.

Jamal Herbert, 29, of Washington, D.C., was charged with DWI, speed to elude, driving on a suspended license, and assault on a law enforcement officer. The passenger was released at the scene.
