Beard Papa's cream puff shop opens in Skyline Center

A cream puff shop is expected today at 3 p.m. in the Skyline Center in Bailey’s Crossroads, Eater DC, reports.

The new shop, at 5201 Leesburg Pike near Target, will be the first Beard Papa’s cream puff franchise in Virginia and the second in the region, following the opening of a shop in Georgetown about three months ago.

Beard Papa’s, a company that originated in Japan, specializes in custard-filled pastries.

At the Beard Papa’s in Georgetown, at 1332 Wisconsin Ave., the most popular items are dolce de leche cream puffs and chocolate éclair cream puffs, says manager Doug Pierce.

The base custards, vanilla and chocolate, are always available, and another variety is added every week on a rotating basis, he says. This week it’s strawberry and next week it will be hazelnut. Other popular varieties include cream puffs with green tea custard and “very berry” cream puffs, with a mix of blackberry, strawberry, and blueberry filling.

That shop also offers chocolate lava cake, mochi ice cream (a Japanese dessert consisting of ice cream enclosed in a shell made of ground sticky rice), espresso drinks, coffee, tea, iced coffee, and iced tea.

The Beard Papa’s franchise in Bailey’s Crossroads has a different owner, Pierce says, so there might be some variation in the menu.

According to the company’s website, the name Bear Papa’s comes from a legendary baker with a big white beard in Osaka, Japan, who created the original cream puff recipe. There are 160 shops in Japan and 230 across the globe.
