A severe storm April 6 with strong wind and heavy rain uprooted trees across the Annandale/Mason District area, damaging buildings and closing roads. There were also reports of flooding, downed power lines, and power outages throughout the area.

A tree fell onto a garden apartment at Heritage Woods in the 4300 block of Americana Drive in Annandale at about 2:30 p.m., the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reports. No one was injured.

Valentin Galeano, the owner of 3710 Lockwood Lane in the Broyhill Crest neighborhood, had just stepped out of his kitchen when a huge tree fell on that part of his house. The tree totally destroyed the deck, knocked off some roof shingles, broke the windshield of one car, and totaled another one.

Galeano’s insurance policy will take care of the damage to the house, but the car, a four-year-old Volkswagen, is a total loss. His son had just gotten it and hadn’t gotten insurance yet. Galeano is just grateful that no one was hurt. “Material things we can replace them,” he says.
