Three teenagers are facing attempted robbery and malicious wounding charges after setting a man on fire in Annandale, the Fairfax County Police Department reported Jan. 23.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the 4500 block of Commons Drive. A man who had been sleeping awoke to find several juveniles setting him on fire in an attempt to steal his backpack. When officers arrived, they found his clothing and backpack had been burned. The victim was treated for injuries to his upper body and was released from the hospital.

A 15-year-old was arrested on Jan. 22, and another 15-year-old was arrested on Jan. 23. A 14-year-old had been arrested on Jan. 21. Police do not believe the incident is gang related, and they do not think anyone else was involved.

  2. Setting a person on fire to steal a backpack? Who is raising this type of kid? I mean, seriously? Beating someone up is not enough, now you have to set them on fire? And the guy was sleeping. Wow. Just the most cowardly thing I have seen. And these are KIDS -- 14 and 15. I'm so scared that my children have to live in this world.

    1. Truly horrible. I don't care from where you came or how young/old you are--doing this to anyone is inexcusable. Always.

  3. I don't understand why everyone keeps saying it happened on Commons Drive. I live in this apartment complex, and the area that the police taped off is in between the buildings of John Adams Ct and Nathan Hale Dr...

  4. This is horrible. Was he sleeping inside his home, or outside?

    1. Outside. According to one of the reporters, the guy was homeless.

    2. Good question. Bit of a fact gap in the story. Reporting isn't what it used to be.

    4. Not even JC can help Mason District as long as this place is dumping ground for all of Farifax's garbage.
