Mountain climber from Annandale dies in accident on Peruvian peak

The bodies of missing mountain climbers, Ben Horne of Annandale and Gil Weiss of New York, were found July 28 in Peru, where they had been attempting to scale Palcaraju Oeste, according to news reports.

The 20,000-foot mountain is in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes. The two had been missing since July 11. They apparently died after falling some 1,000 feet after reaching the summit. Searchers found evidence of an avalanche. Weiss, 29, and Horne, 32, were both experienced climbers.

Horne was a graduate student at the University of California at San Diego studying economics. The photo of Horne in Peru is from his post in the Pullharder blog.
