St. Michael statue reported stolen

The statue of St. Michael in the side yard of 4303 Evergreen Lane, Annandale, has been stolen, reports owner Mi Suk Kim.

The last time she saw it was 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3. When she woke up Tuesday morning, she noticed it was gone. “It looks like someone cut it,” said Kim, a doctor with an ob/gyn practice on the other side of Evergreen. There was a thunderstorm the night before, so she didn’t hear anyone removing the statue from its pedestal.

The statue had welcomed visitors to St. Michael Church on Ravensworth Road in Annandale for some 50 years before Kim obtained it in late2011. She donated $1,500 to the Catholic church for it

“I was so scared,” Kim said. “I feel so terrible because I feel I was responsible.” She doesn’t think the statue is worth a lot of money, but it has a very high sentimental value. She noted how everybody enjoyed looking at it as they drove down Evergreen Lane. There was no fence around it, but she now plans to put up a fence and gate to protect her home.

The Mason District Police station urges anyone with information about the theft to call Crime Solvers, 866/411-TIPS/8477, or text “TIP187” plus your message to CRIMES/274637.

  1. What is wrong with this world?

  2. This makes me so sad. My son and I love to see this statue as we drive to the library. Hopefully it will be back soon.

  3. Hideous statue, we are better off without it.

  4. Even with a thunderstorm, that statue is close enough to that house that you'd hear people pulling up (need a truck or van to haul it away), cutting it down, and moving it. Even if they used some sort of handsaw, it'd take a good deal of time to get it down. Technically wouldn't this be considered some sort of hate crime since they stole/vandalized a religious item on personal property?

  5. Yeah, sounds like a hate crime to me. Hideous...or just a really bad prank. Hopefully it will resurface soon and be returned. Jeez.
