Workshops focus on helping eligible people apply for property tax relief

Residents who qualify for real estate tax relief are invited to attend a workshop at the Mason District Government Center hosted by Mason Supervisor Penny Gross in collaboration with the Fairfax County Department of Tax Administration

At the workshops, scheduled for March 4 and 6, 9 a.m.-noon, county staff will help residents complete the tax relief application. No appointment is necessary.

Tax relief is available to people age 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled, and meet certain income requirements.

If a homeowner’s gross income from all sources, along with the income of any relatives who live in the house, is $52,000 or less, the homeowner can seek 100 percent exemption from real estate taxes. A homeowner meeting the above qualifications but has an income between $52,000 and $62,000 can seek 50 percent tax relief. An income between $62,000 and $72,000 can qualify an eligible homeowner for 25 percent tax relief.
