Fatal pedestrian accident at Braddock Road and Little River Turnpike

A pedestrian was struck and killed by truck in the intersection of Little River Turnpike and Braddock Road shortly before 8 p.m. on Feb. 2, the Fairfax County Police Department reports.

The victim was subsequently identified as Waneta M. Achaj, 58, of Alexandria, the FCPD announced Feb. 3.

She was crossing Little River Turnpike from north to south outside of the crosswalk and was wearing a dark jacket and no reflective clothing. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a 2002 Ford F150, 59-year-old male, had a green light and turned right onto eastbound Little River Turnpike from Braddock Road when he struck the pedestrian. The driver remained on the scene.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the FCPD Crash Reconstruction Unit witness line at 703-280-0543, or contact Crime Solvers, 866-411-TIPS/8477.

  1. My heart goes out to Waneta's family and friends, and to the driver as well. I hope that they can somehow find comfort in the times ahead.

  2. The bigger streets in this area, such as Columbia Pike and Little River Turnpike, are exceptionally busy and a challenge for pedestrians to cross. We may need to consider overhead or under-street passages at some of the busier locations. Such passages have their disadvantages, but having to cross these streets on foot can be scary. The better we can separate pedestrians and traffic, the happier both will be.
