Trails in Mason District Park to close for stream project

Turkeycock Run
Some trails in Mason District Park will be closed for the next few months while stream restoration will be carried out on Turkeycock Run. A pedestrian bridge near the park entrance at Sleepy Hollow Road will be replaced.

Surveying work could start as early as this week, said Yudhie Brownson, a construction manager with the Fairfax County Park Authority. The project will generally be limited to the area to the right of the main entrance on Columbia Pike. The work should be completed before the summer concert season starts in the amphitheater in June 2018.

The athletic fields and tennis courts won’t be affected and will still be open for use.

The project involves the restoration of approximately 1,575 linear feet of Turkeycock Run using natural channel design techniques. The primary goal is to stabilize the channel and prevent future erosion and degradation along the stream.

A large portion of the park’s trail network will be affected, the Park Authority states, and “temporary closures will be implemented to ensure the safety of the public and the project team.”

Fairfax County’s Stormwater Planning Division and Utility Design and Construction Division have contracted with Environmental Quality Resources LLC to carry out the work.

I'm glad to hear that the county is investing in projects like this to protect our parks. They're a great resource!
