This weekend is a Virginia tax holiday, you can buy certain items without having to pay sales taxes.
Eligible items include school supplies, clothing, shoes, emergency preparedness products, and Energy Star and WaterSense products.
Tax breaks are available for a long list of school supplies costing less than $20 per item and clothing that is $100 or less per item. Clothing accessories, protective equipment, and sports equipment are not eligible.
Hurricane and emergency preparedness items that qualify for the sales tax exemption include portable generators (costing $1,000 or less), gas-powered chainsaws ($350 or less), chainsaw accessories and other items, such as battery-powered radios, smoke detectors, and tarps ($60 or less).
To get the tax break, appliances must have an Energy Star sticker and must cost $2,500 or less. Eligible items include washing machines, air conditions, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, refrigerators, and ceiling fans.
Eligible projects with a WaterSense sticker must cost $2,500 or less and can include faucets, shower heads, toilets, and landscape irrigation controllers.
