Fairfax County summer camps canceled

Park trails, like this one at Luria Park in Annandale, are open, but just about all other Fairfax County park facilities remain closed.
The Fairfax County Park Authority and the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) have cancelled all summer camp programs, due to the COVID-19 crisis.

That includes all summer camps sponsored by the Park Authority, REC-Pac programs held at local schools, and summer programs sponsored by NCS, including programs at community centers, SACC (School Age Child Care) programs, Therapeutic Recreation Camp, Value in Prevention Camp, and Teens in Action.

“As the public health situation is dynamic in nature, if Fairfax County facilities are able to re-open during the summer, we will consider offering limited on-site youth programming to meet the needs of families across Fairfax County,” says NCS Director Chris Leonard.

Senior Centers, Adult Day Health Care Centers, community centers, neighborhood centers, resource centers, and teen centers remain closed to the public.

The Park Authority will not open its outdoor water attractions this summer, including the Water Mine in Reston and Our Special Harbor Spray Ground at the Lee District Family Recreation Area.

The Park Authority has opened just three of its 10 farmers markets, in Burke, Mount Vernon, and Reston. There has been no decision on whether the other markets – including the ones at Mason District Park and Wakefield Park in Annandale – will open this summer.

The Great Waves Waterpark in Alexandria, operated by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NOVA Parks), will not open until it is safe to do so.  At other sites run by NOVA Parks, park gates, parking lots, trails, and golf courses reopened May 20, but many facilities are closed.

Fairfax County Public Schools are reopening school tracks and tennis courts, beginning May 22, for individual exercise. No team activities are allowed, and school-based playgrounds, basketball courts, and athletic fields remain closed until further notice.

  1. It makes one wonder what the criteria for opening farmers' markets is. Three can open, but the others can't. How are they making decisions on farmers' markets?
